Purpose : | | A 24 hour urine collection is a simple diagnostic procedure that measures the components of urine. The test is noninvasive (the skin is not pierced), and is used to assess kidney (renal) function. However, if your physician ordered a Creatinine Clearance test, an additional blood sample is required.
24 hour urine collection is performed by collecting a person's urine in a special container over a 24-hour period. The container must be kept cool during this time until it is returned to the lab for analysis. |
 | | |
Preparation: | | 1. Generally, no prior preparation, such as fasting or sedation, is required.
2. If possible, choose a 24-hour period when you will be at home so you do not have to transport your urine.
3. You will be given one or more containers for collecting and storing your urine by your physician’s office, or you will pick up a container at the ORMC Lab. An orange plastic container is typically used to store the urine. A specimen pan or urinal may be used to collect the urine. You will need to transfer the urine from the collecting container to the storage container where it will be kept cold.
4. Each storage container will have your name and the name of the test written on it.
5. Keep your storage container refrigerated throughout the 24-hour collection period until you bring it back to the laboratory. If you do not have access to a refrigerator, your collection should be kept on ice or in a cooler. |
 | | |
Procedure: | | 1. You should void and discard the first morning specimen. This will be the “time started.”
2. You should collect and save every urine specimen for the next 24 hours.
3. At exactly 24 hours after “time started”, you should empty your bladder and save the specimen.
4. All 24-hour urine collections should be refrigerated (kept on ice) until tested.
5. Please bring your urine back to the Laboratory as soon as possible. To prevent leaks, make sure the lid is on tightly, and that the container is transported upright inside a plastic bag. If the weather is warm and you must travel a long distance, transport your urine container on ice or in a cooler. |

After Care: | | Generally there is no special type of care following 24-urine collection. However, your physician may give you additional or alternate instructions after the procedure, depending on your particular situation. |
