Where:
You will report to the Radiology registration area on the 1st floor of Cobb Tower, Oconee Regional Medical Center.
Purpose :
Mammography is a specialized x-ray exam of your breast designed to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms. Mammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancers because it can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them.
Preparation:
You will need to bring a copy of your insurance card and your doctor’s order. If your previous mammogram was performed at another facility, please be sure to bring it with you or have it sent to us for comparison. On the morning of your exam, wash your breast and underarms. Do not use deodorant, powder, perfume, as this may have an appearance similar to calcifications on your mammogram. Since you will need to undress from the waist up, please wear a comfortable two–piece outfit.
Procedure:
This procedure usually takes about 30 minutes. Your breast will be placed on a special platform and gradually compressed with a paddle. The compression may be slightly uncomfortable, but should not be painful. It last only a few seconds. Compressing the breast evens out the breast tissue, enabling the image to show very subtle abnormalities.
After Care:
After the exam, you can return to normal daily activities. Your screening mammogram will be sent to Computer Aided Detection (CAD) service. CAD is another new technique that can be applied to mammography exams to identify and mark regions of interest that are potentially indicative of cancer. Once it returns a Board Certified Radiologist will render a final report. The written report will be mailed to you within 7 to 10 working days.
